Over 200 excited kids, teachers, family and friends of the school gathered on the back field to watch Richie arrive at the school in a helicopter. Richie appeared from the helicopter carrying two cartons of chilled Fonterra Milk for Schools and the whole crowd erupted with applause and excitement!
Once safely on the ground, the kids directed Richie, our local Fonterra Farmers and local MP Willow-Jean Prime, into the school to their official assembly spot outside under the large tree canopy to officially welcome their special guests. After a warm welcoming from the school, Principal Tim Couling, Willow-Jean and Richie shared a few words before the fun began!
Okaihau Primary School have been part of Fonterra Milk for Schools since our pilot in the Northland region back in 2012. Richie reminded the kids about the goodness of milk and dairy, and how important this is for helping to build strong teeth, bones and muscles to help kids learn, run and play.
Three kids had a chance to ask Richie a question each. Seven year-old Mia Rumble, who made the schools winning nomination, asked Richie why he decided to stop playing rugby. Richie told the school that after a 15-year success with the All Blacks he was happy to finish on a high following the 2015 Rugby World Cup. It was time to hang up his boots and move on to a new passion, flying helicopters, which he was very happy to share with the kids today.
The kids moved into their school houses and got involved in fun farm-themed games including Move the Cows, Gumboot Toss & an epic 4-way tug of war showdown!
