In May we set up a competition to find New Zealand’s fastest folder, to celebrate the regional anniversaries of the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme. Schools uploaded video clips of students folding their Fonterra Milk for Schools packs, and the times just kept getting quicker and quicker!
Bailey McNamara-Hunt, age 10
Turns out that our Fastest Folder really can fold a milk pack quicker than you can say “Fonterra Milk for Schools”! At just 4.5 seconds, Bailey from Milson School is our first Fastest Folder champion. Congratulations, Bailey!
Check out Bailey in action on Grand Final Day:
We had finalists from all regions poised to see who would be announced the fastest folder. At an event held at Otama Farm near Auckland on Monday 24th November, the folding times had been compared, and Bailey took out his title. Not only champion of the Manawatu-Wanganui region, but winner of a year’s supply of Anchor Milk for him and his family to enjoy.
With 100’s of entries from up and down the country, there’s been a lot of healthy competition going on in New Zealand schools these last months. Our contenders obviously took the job seriously, and we can’t believe how fast the times got. Not even Richie McCaw could beat our pint-sized contestants! We can’t be too hard on Richie though, because our kids had great practice throughout the year. Every milk pack they drink throughout the year is flattened or folded and collected ready for recycling – not just during the competition period.

In October 2013, Fonterra’s ‘Milk for Schools’ Recycling Product Stewardship Scheme was accredited, a recognition of the programme’s commitment to effectively minimise waste. A year later, and it was time to check in with the Ministry of Education and review whether we’d met our objectives.
